While Sound Forge is only an audio editor for tasks such as audio restoration, mastering and sound design, it has a dedicated following, especially on Mac where such programs are a rarity. Sound Forge was developed by Sonic Foundry and sold to Sony in 2003, but the Japanese giant sold the program along with most of its creative suite to MAGIX last year. Since the acquisition, Magix has been reviving the entire product line, releasing Sound Forge Audio Studio 12 and Sound Forge Pro Mac 3.

Sound Forge Pro began as a mastering workstation for Windows-based audio engineers in 1993 and was purchased from Sony in 2016 by Magix. Magix Software has upgraded Sound Forge Pro to version 12, featuring more processing power and more audio tools, but unfortunately still retains that ugly, circa-1998 Windows interface.
